Latest Newcastle United transfer news and gossip as several players continue to be linked with a move to St James’ Park.

Newcastle United have had a quiet January transfer window, but that doesn’t mean their business has completely come to an end.

The Magpies did not add any new signings to their squad despite being linked with several players since the turn of the year. In terms of exits, though, Miguel Almiron has completed a permanent move to Atlanta in Major League Soccer, while Lloyd Kelly is closing in on a move to Juventus.

Even though the transfer deadline for Newcastle and the rest of the Premier League was on Monday night, there is still the possibility that players could still move to St James’ Park. There is nothing to stop the Magpies from signing free agents in the days or weeks after the deadline, provided they have not played for another club after the window closing.

It remains to be seen if Newcastle will consider looking at the free-agent market for new signings. One area of the squad that could be of interest for reinforcements is centre-back, after the failed pursuit of Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi last summer.

Former Manchester City and Lyon defender Jason Denayer is now a free agent after leaving Saudi Pro League club Al Fateh last month. The defender is also joined by fellow centre-back Daniel Amartey in being a free agent, with the former Leicester City star without a club since leaving Besiktas last September.

Should Newcastle want to sign a new forward, there are several options on the free-agent market that are seemingly available. Former Liverpool star Ryan Kent is without a club after leaving Fenerbahce by mutual consent in October last year.

Former Sevilla and Monaco star WissamBen Yedder is also available to be signed as a free agent. The France international left Monaco last year after the expiration of his contract and is yet to find a new club despite scoring 20 goals in 34 appearances last term.

Newcastle’s lack of action in the January transfer window is not a surprise. Magpies boss Eddie Howe said recently: “We knew this window – barring something huge happening that we didn’t expect – would be a window that we didn’t recruit in.
