Ruben Amorim names Leicester City player Man United exploited amid offside goal honesty
The Portuguese manager gives his thoughts on Harry Maguire’s controversial late winner and how substitute Alejandro Garnacho swung the FA Cup tie in his side’s favour
Ruben Amorim has expressed his sympathy with Ruud van Nistelrooy and Leicester City over Harry Maguire’s controversial last-minute FA Cup winner.
The Manchester United manager admitted his side received a slice of luck in winning the tie with Maguire’s 93rd-minute header, which replays showed was offside. With no VAR in play, the goal was allowed to stand, leaving City boss Ruud van Nistelrooy to rue an “unacceptable” decision.
Amorim felt for van Nistelrooy and said the moment emphasises the need for VAR in the game. In his post-match press conference, he said: “Sometimes we need a bit of luck and today we had it.
“With VAR it was not a goal and I think it’s important to have it because it’s fair for the game. It’s really hard to lose a game in the last minute with an offside play. Sometimes we deserve a little bit of luck.”
United had dominated the final half-hour, getting back on level terms with Joshua Zirkzee’s rebound before pushing for a winner. The difference-maker was half-time substitute Alejandro Garnacho, whose pace and directness caused City lots of problems on their right flank.
The Argentinian winger almost had a goal himself, Caleb Okoli clearing off the line to deny him, and he played a big part in Zirkzee’s goal too. Amorim felt he was able to exploit James Justin’s tiredness on the flank.
