Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney has given a candid assessment of who he feels least sorry for when times get tough at sports teams, admitting he has a simple message for owners..

Rob McElhenney, co-owner of Wrexham, has revealed who he thinks gets a raw deal when times are hard in sports.

The star of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, who acquired the Welsh football club alongside Ryan Reynolds in 2021, came clean about where his sympathies lie. There have been plenty of good times for McElhenney at Wrexham, including consecutive promotions under manager Phil Parkinson.

However, Tuesday night’s 2-1 loss to Leyton Orient in League One offered a reminder of how it’s not always plain sailing. You might therefore expect McElhenney, 47, to sympathise with owners who get stick when things go wrong.

Despite this, he admitted that owners don’t rank high on his sympathy scale after bluntly declaring: “F*** them.” McElhenney explained his views while appearing on the Hot Ones show on YouTube, pointing out that teams will naturally have their share of triumphs and failures, but it’s the supporters and athletes who truly bear the weight when performances dip.

He said: “Teams are going to go up and down… but you have these organisations that even when they go down, they only go down for a couple years, and then they come back up.

“Then you have other organisations that are middling for so long, or maybe always at the bottom. I always feel so bad for the fanbase more than anything else, because they deserve something better. It has to come from the top at a certain point.”
