Man Utd decision ‘upset’ Sir Alex Ferguson before he angrily hit back at ‘nonsense’ claim
Sir Alex Ferguson delivered trophy after trophy over the course of his historic reign at Manchester United, but David Moyes’ spell in charge after he succeeded his fellow Scot proved problematic
Sir Alex Ferguson admitted he was left “upset” by David Moyes’ sacking over a decade ago – while he was also incensed by “nonsense” claims that he had left a declining team at Manchester United.
When Ferguson stepped down in 2013 after winning his 13th and final Premier League title, he strongly recommended Moyes as his successor at Old Trafford. Despite a promising start with a 4-1 Premier League away win over Swansea City, Moyes saw a rapid downturn in fortunes.
His tenure lasted just 10 months before he was dismissed, with United in seventh place at the time. As the first manager of the post-Ferguson era, Moyes’ downward spiral was always under the spotlight.
Moyes’ final match was a 2-0 away loss to his former side Everton – who he returned to this January and has so far guided to four wins and a 2-2 draw against Liverpool in his last five matches. Ferguson had empathy for Moyes’ departure in 2014, but rejected any suggestion that he was to blame for the state of the squad.
