West Bromwich Albion Battle League One side for National League Free Agent
Championship side West Bromwich Albion are considering a move for Piers Hatcliff after he left National League side Southend in the summer, as League One Barnsley continue their long-held interest in the player.
Hatcliff was one of a number of players who departed Southend this summer after being at the club since he was six years old. He can operate as a “central midfielder or as a forward” according to Southend’s website but is described as a left-winger in other reports and has impressed at youth levels.
The player reportedly wants to ensure that the next move he makes gives him the best possible chance to play at a top level in his career. Barnsley had been considering a move all summer but may now find it difficult to land their target as the Baggies look to get in on the move.
According to Alan Nixon, the player is now more likely to move to West Brom as it is seen as a “better option” to progress his career to the topflight.
At such a young age and a short career it can be daunting picking the best move to ensure your trajectory continues upwards. Many young talents take the “big” move early and find themselves stagnating in academy systems until they are spat out at 23 with little to no experience.
Fortunately for Hatcliff, it would appear both sides that are interested will be able to offer him the best possible prospects at developing his career. Barnsley may be more likely to offer him first team football sooner than their Championship counterparts, but West Brom are currently at a higher level (depending how the Tykes do this season). It is a difficult choice but it would appear as though he is taking his time to ensure that whatever move he takes has been thoroughly considered.
