Astros mailbag: Is first base a possibility for Yordan Alvarez?

Surprising Update On Ex-Red Sox Target After Alex Bregman Deal
Houston still is looking for ways to replace Bregman

The Astros didn’t succeed at first, but they apparently tried again.

Nolan Arenado, who has a no-trade in his contract, nixed a move to Houston in early December when the organization started preparing for life without Alex Bregman. But after Bregman officially latched on with the Boston, the Astros and the Cardinals “re-engaged in brief trade discussions” centered around the 10-time Gold Glove winner, per The Athletic’s Chandler Rome and Katie Woo.

Unsurprisingly, a potential Arenado trade to Houston reportedly is not gaining any traction and the St. Louis third baseman hasn’t changed his mind about the idea of playing for the Astros.

The unsuccessful trade talks were made despite Houston’s reported presence on Arenado’s list of teams he’d consider waiving his no-trade clause for. The list, according to Woo, also features the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, San Diego Padres and the Red Sox, who all but surely are out of the running with Bregman now on their roster.

How unlikely is a Cardinals-Astros trade for Arenado? Well, one source told The Athletic the proposed deal is a “non-starter,” while another labeled the potential move as “a long shot.”
