Should the Indianapolis Colts Reunite with Valuable Contributor?
The Indianapolis Colts could benefit from signing Zack Moss, who could be cut by the Cincinnati Bengals this offseason.
The Indianapolis Colts need a backup running back. Should they go after Zack Moss this spring?
Moss, of course, is a former Colt. The former Utah star played in Indianapolis from 2022-2023. He is not set to be a free agent this offseason. Yet, he will be if he’s cut by the Cincinnati Bengals. Zachary Rotman of Fansided listed Moss as a Bengal who’s in danger of getting cut:
“With (Chase) Brown still under contract, it makes little sense to pay Zack Moss the $4.8 million he’s owed in 2025 regardless of what happens with that star trio (Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, and Trey Hendrickson). The Bengals can save over $3 million by cutting him, and can find a cheaper backup to Brown either in the draft or in free agency.”
It remains to be seen whether the Bengals will cut Zack Moss. But if they do and he becomes a free agent, the Colts need to sign him. He’d be a great backup for starter Jonathan Taylor.

His Career in Indianapolis
A third-round pick in 2020, Zack Moss began his career with the Buffalo Bills. He was traded to the Colts in 2022 for fellow running back Nyheim Hines.
Zack Moss was impressive during the 2022 regular-season finale. Filling in for the injured Jonathan Taylor, he rushed for 114 yards and a touchdown in a loss to the Houston Texans.
Moss had a breakout year in 2023. Entering Week 7, he was the NFL’s second-leading rusher behind the San Francisco 49ers’ Christian McCaffrey. Taylor, who began the season on the PUP list, eventually returned to the lineup, but Moss still maintained a prominent role in Indy’s offense. Zack Moss was at his best during the Colts’ Week 5 win over the Tennessee Titans. In that game, he rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns and had two catches for 30 yards. Moss finished the 2023 season as the Colts’ leading rusher with a career-high 794 rushing yards and five touchdowns. He also had 27 catches for 192 yards and two touchdowns.
Should the Colts Bring Him Back?
Jonathan Taylor plays like a superstar when healthy and remains one of the NFL’s top running backs. He led the league in rushing in 2021, playing all 17 games that year. Yet, he has battled

injuries since then. The Colts need to find a backup for Taylor, seeing that they never found a replacement for Zack Moss. Trey Sermon and Tyler Goodson didn’t inspire much hope last season.
Zack Moss is coming off a forgettable 2024 campaign in Cincinnati. He rushed for only 242 yards and two touchdowns over eight games. He then missed the final nine games due to injury. But just because Moss didn’t have a great year, doesn’t mean he wouldn’t have one if he returned to Indy this spring. He did a phenomenal job, backing up Taylor. If he can stay healthy, he can still be the valuable contributor that he was in 2023. So yes, the Colts should bring Moss back if the Bengals part ways with him this offseason.
