Regis Le Bris issues firm response to Sunderland fans’ calls to drop 24-year-old vs Sheffield Wednesday
Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris has backed his goalkeeper Anthony Patterson after last weekend’s mistake led to calls for him to be dropped.
Sunderland have had an excellent season, sitting in 4th place with 12 games remaining in the campaign. SAFC have stumbled in the last two weeks though, suffering back-to-back defeats against Leeds United and Hull City.
An error from goalkeeper Anthony Patterson was ultimately the reason for the loss over Hull City. Patterson fumbled a corner from former SAFC loanee Joe Gelhardt, sending it straight into the his own net.
That led to calls for Patterson to be dropped against Sheffield Wednesday on Friday. However, head coach Regis Le Bris has been quick to back his starting number one.
In his pre-match press conference, streamed via the club’s YouTube channel, the Sunderland boss said:
“He’s been really good this season, he’s been really good.
“When a striker or goalkeeper makes a mistake like that, the consequences are always different. But Anthony has been a very good goalkeeper for the team so far this season and is still a good goalkeeper.
“He can make mistakes and he has to learn from these experiences and find the best way to finish the season.”
