Glenn Whelan will take charge of his first game as manager in mid-week

Glenn Whelan has stepped up as caretaker manager of Wigan Athletic following the sacking of Shaun Maloney.

Maloney had brought in the Stoke City legend, aged 41, as first team coach in September and Whelan will now take charge of an away match at Mansfield Town on Tuesday night (7.45pm).

Wigan are 15th, 17 points behind the play-off places and six above the bottom four. They have won one of the last seven and lost 2-1 at home to Reading on Saturday.

Former Wigan managers Gary Caldwell and Leam Richardson are among the bookies’ frontrunners to take on the job. Ex-Derby County boss Paul Warne and Ryan Lowe, formerly of Plymouth and Preston, are also on the short list, as well as Ian Evatt. Whelan is currently 25/1 to take it on full-time.

A statement from Wigan said: “Home results and performances, in particular, have been disappointing and below the standard at which our supporters expect.

“For this reason, the board felt that it was time for a change. The timing of such change will allow the club the necessary time to appoint a successor and enable the club to look forward to the future.”
