No hangover from Sunderland, Sheff Utd wins
Leeds United were brought back down to Earth somewhat with their 1-1 draw at home to West Brom at the weekend, off the back of two dramatic wins against promotion rivals.
It would have been naive to expect Leeds to coast through the rest of the season without any bumps in the road after their back-to-back wins against Sunderland and Sheffield United.
The high of those late victories against two sides in the automatic promotion race was unsurprisingly met with something of a lull against West Brom in the following game.
Pascal Struijk assesses dip in performance v West Brom after five straight league wins
At some point, you’re bound to have a slight drop-off, but the fact Leeds have maintained their unbeaten run – which now stands at 17 games – is a remarkable feat.
The emotion of how Leeds beat both the Black Cats and the Blades looked from the outside like it could have had an impact on the squad against West Brom in that early kick-off.
However, that’s not how Pascal Struijk sees it, as he discussed the 1-1 draw with Tony Mowbray’s side and the possibility of a ‘hangover’ from those wins (via LUFC):
“No, I don’t think so,” Struijk answered. “The last two games have been quite emotional, we gave a lot, but we managed to push until the very end and create chances. It’s just unfortunate we didn’t put it in the back of the net.
“[Late comebacks] shouldn’t be a normal thing, the fact it happens is really good because it shows that we are ready and fit for the full 90 minutes, but the quicker we can finish games off, the better for us.
“Sometimes when you draw these games, it almost feels like a loss, as you want to take all three points. One point, is still one point forward, still one point in the right direction, so we’ll see what happens with the other results.”
