Sheffield Wednesday need transformative change before even thinking about potential Danny Rohl replacements: Opinion
Sheffield Wednesday look set to face the dilemma of replacing manager Danny Rohl when the 2024/25 campaign comes to an end.
Sheffield Wednesday appointed Danny Rohl as manager in October 2023. There was excitement over his arrival at SWFC, but few knew just how big a coup he would prove to be.
The Owls were staring down the barrel at at immediate return to League One football after a dismal start to the season under Xisco Munoz, but Rohl came in and turned the tide, keeping the club up against the odds.
This season has brought the chance to kick on. While perhaps not backed to the extent required, the Wednesday boss has been able to make signings of his own, some of which required transfer fees.
However, the mood at Sheffield Wednesday is turning amid reports of a renewed Southampton swoop for Rohl, and it feels increasingly likely that the German will be moving on from Hillsborough when the campaign comes to a close.
Big changes needed, but perhaps not likely
Should Rohl depart, fingers will be pointed at Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri. There’s no doubt about that.
The Thai businessman’s running of the club has been heavily criticised for some time now and it’s clear that the Owls’ ambitions do not match that of their highly-touted boss Rohl. There is no footballing structure between the manager and Chansiri, leading to SWFC’s disjointed function off the pitch and ultimately, a near collapse in the relationship between the owner and manager earlier this season.
