NY Mets spring training hero from last year is doing the same damage for the Red Sox
For the second straight year, he’s clobbering pitchers in spring training.
Every spring training seems to have a couple of journeymen who outperform even the best players on the New York Mets roster. Fans naturally jump to conclusions about their role, elevating them to an unrealistic pedestal. One of those very same players is doing it again early on in 2025, this time for the Boston Red Sox.
Remember Trayce Thompson? He spent the early part of spring training 2024 wearing a Mets uniform and looking like he might actually be someone to break camp with. Three games in February and he already had a grand slam, another home run, and was sitting pretty with 4 hits, 6 RBI, and a .571 batting average.
Thompson never made any real push toward making the Mets roster nor did he make much sense. Reality eventually set in. A 2 for 17 performance in March solidified what we should have already known: he’s a Four-A player and spring training is their time to shine.
A spring training hero for the Mets in 2024, Trayce Thompson is at it again for the Red Sox
We’re a little deeper into spring training 2025 than we were last year when reality set in for Thompson. However, he hasn’t seemed to slow down. A pair of home runs in February got him off to a strong start.
Two more already in March might have Red Sox fans thinking something stupid, like adding him to their Opening Day roster. His 4 home runs this spring are tied for the lead in baseball. He’s a .333/.462/1.000 hitter overall with 2 home runs, 7 RBI, and 2 stolen bases. He has, for what it’s worth, struck out 7 times as well in 26 trips to the plate.
