Cincinnati Reds pitching dominates in 1-0 win over the Angels
It was a nail biter as far as things can be one during spring training as the Cincinnati Reds held onto a 1-0 lead for the final six innings of the game. Their victory over the Los Angeles Angels ended their 7-game losing streak as they improved to 10-14-1 on the spring.
The Highlights
Nick Martinez took the ball today for the Reds and he pitched well for the most part. The righty kept the Angels off of the board for 4.0 innings and allowed just one hit, though he did have to work around three walks. He was able to do that in part thanks to his six strikeouts on the day.
Cincinnati had a good chance to plate a run early in the 3rd inning after Austin Wynns led off with a double and the Blake Dunn doubled into the right field corner to follow. For some reason, though, Austin Wynns went back to the bag to try and tag up on a ball that landed 15 feet past the right fielder and was then thrown out easily at the plate on a ball he could have scored on if he were running backwards from the start. Dunn would come around to score later in the inning on a single by Matt McLain that put the Reds in front 1-0.
After Sam Moll threw a perfect 5th inning with a strikeout, it was Tony Santillan’s turn to come in out of the bullpen. With two outs he almost made a spectacular play as a comebacker went off of his glove as he swiped behind his back, but Elly De La Cruz turned it into a highlight play of his own as he switched directions to field the ball, turn and then fire the ball to first to end the inning.
