Red Sox' Ceddanne Rafaela has room for improvement

Red Sox’s Top Prospect Dealing With Shoulder Soreness

One of the most intriguing players for the Boston Red Sox has not yet suited up for the team. After locking up No. 2 prospect Kristian Campbell to an eight-year extension, the Red Sox are preparing for No. 1 prospect Roman Anthony’s inevitable debut. However, Anthony is currently battling an injury that has not limited his offensive prowess but has forced him out of the outfield. Anthony is dealing with “minor right shoulder soreness,” according to Chris Henrique of Boston Sports Journal.

This is probably not a big deal, as he is still having a phenomenal year for Triple-A Worcester, but it is something to monitor. Anthony, who turns 21 next month, is batting .283 with a .941 OPS and two home runs through his first 59 plate appearances for Worcester. His hot start is no surprise, given his tantalizing profile and last season’s production in Triple-A, which saw him bat .344 with a .983 OPS, and three home runs over 35 games.

It is still encouraging to see him progress into the budding star that fans and the front office covet. Anthony is doing just about everything he can to earn a roster spot, but there are circumstances beyond his control. Boston has an everyday starting outfield trio of Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela, and Wilyer Abreu, with Campbell having seen time in center, too. Plus, Masataka Yoshida will likely need to play in the field upon his return from the injured list, with Rafael Devers taking his previous designated hitter job.

Perhaps Yoshida ends up on the trading block, or Rafaela is bumped to the bench if he continues to struggle at the plate, but neither scenario is guaranteed. Hopefully, for the Red Sox, Anthony can put this minor injury behind him and make his way to the Show this summer.
