What Leicester City need from next season’s manager – and what Ruud van Nistelrooy would want
Leicester City have still not held talks with manager Ruud van Nistelrooy over their plans for next season with the Dutchman seeking to land on the same page as the club
When Leicester City were last relegated, it was easier to make a fresh start.
Manager Dean Smith and his staff were only on a deal until the end of the season, and so it was simple to let them go.
Seven senior players were out of contract too, and there were a few obvious departures like James Maddison and Harvey Barnes, players that City did not have to tout around to get big fees for.
That fresh start under a new boss in Enzo Maresca felt like it was necessary to get City back up to the Premier League. But for the occasional grumbles over the playing style, it paid off.
But it might be more difficult this time to get the same sense that the slate is being wiped clean.
There are just three players out of contract, and only one of those, Jamie Vardy, is playing regularly. Plus, there’s only really Mads Hermansen and Bilal El Khannouss that might attract big bids, and even then that’s just a maybe.
