Ipswich Town: Tony Mowbray sacked by West Brom
Ipswich Town legend Tony Mowbray has been sacked as head coach of West Brom after just three months of his second spell in charge.
The 61-year-old returned to the Hawthorns in January after a year out of the game due to undergoing treatment for bowel cancer.
He had previously managed them between 2006 and 2009, leading them to the second tier title in 2007/08.
Mowbray was dismissed after yesterday’s 3-1 home defeat by relegation-threatened Derby County, which all but ended the Baggies’ hopes of making the Championship play-offs.
He departs alongside fellow ex-Blue Mark Venus, who has been his long serving assistant manager.
They had been in charge for 18 games, winning five, drawing five and losing eight which leaves them six points away from the play-off spots, with just two games to play.
A club statement read: “The club would like to place on record its thanks to Tony and Mark for their efforts – but has made the decision to part company following a series of poor results.
“Tony and Mark will forever be welcome at The Hawthorns and their contributions to the club winning the 2007/08 Sky Bet Championship title will never be forgotten. Everyone at Albion wishes Tony and Mark all the very best in the future.”
The duo were key members of the Blues’ 2000 promotion-winning side, with Mowbray working as a coach and caretaker manager at Portman Road after his retirement.
In total, together they made over 300 appearances during their time at Town, with them both inducted into the Blues’ Hall of Fame in 2016 and 2025 respectively.
