A hat-trick from Borja Sainz ended Derby’s 100 per cent home record in the Championship as the Canaries sealed a 3-2 win in a pulsating encounter.

But the game was mired in controversy given Sainz’s first and third goals should have been ruled out as the ball went out of play in the build-up. However, Thorup had his own complaint about Blackett-Taylor’s stoppage time goal which he believed should not have stood.

“It is a big win, and it is a big thing for us to be the first team to do that here in the season. Not just to score a goal but to score three,” he said. “We knew in the good moments we could control it, and we could dominate, and we could also sometimes create a little bit of a slower game picture, which was in our favour.

“We knew there would be moments where we had to fight and withstand the pressure, and do everything we could for the result and and I think the guys did that so importantly for us.”

Asked for his view on Norwich’s controversial first goal, Thorup added: “I can obviously not see it from my position, whether it’s in or out. I think it’s so easy for me to sit here, and for other coaches to sit here, and just blame the referees Saturday after Saturday.

“We just have to make sure that we support them the best way, whether that’s with a video system on the outside, to support them even better, or another idea. That’s the way to go to support these guys, because there will be these moments in the game, because it’s so intense, there’s so many situations.

“Derby’s second goal is also clearly offside, which is not important for us to discuss, because that will happen if there’s not better support around the referee. So it will be an ongoing discussion throughout the season, also the next seasons.

“So most important for me is just to mention we have to support them, and give them all the support they need to perform on the best level.”
