Philadelphia 76ers Fans Unhappy With Latest News on Team’s Future.
There is a lot of positivity around the Philadelphia 76ers right now after they added Paul George this offseason alongside players like Andre Drummond, Caleb Martin and more, building a roster that is being viewed as a Championship contender heading into the 2024-25 season. It does not take long for things to change in the NBA though. And the uncertainty around the franchise’s future in Philadelphia could potentially overshadow a lot of the great things that they have done recently.
The issue is that the 76ers might not remain in Philadelphia for many more years. That is because they have a potential opportunity to move the team to Camden, New Jersey and it is one that they are believed to be considering seriously. According to Tom Bergeron, a team spokesperson told ROI-NJ: “We have worked tirelessly for the past five years to build an arena in Philadelphia, and negotiations remain ongoing with city leadership regarding our proposal at Market East. “The reality is, we are running out of time to reach an agreement that will allow the 76ers to open our
new home in time for the 2031-32 NBA season. “As a result, we must take all potential options seriously, including this one.” Distance-wise, that is not a big move at all and the 76ers already have had corporate headquarters and a practice facility in Camden since the fall of 2016. It would feel wrong for the 76ers to no longer be located in Philadelphia. Then there is the potential of a name change. One would think that that is not a step that the franchise would take considering the history and brand value tied with it. Never say never in basketball though. 76ers fans were not
particularly happy with the news. One user wrote on X: “Na, stay in Philadelphia. For historical reasons. This just doesn’t sit well with me.” Another wrote: “Can’t imagine Philadelphia without basketball.” Some viewed it as a tactic on the part of the team though: “Stop it. They are only saying this to put pressure on the city to build a new stadium. Every team does this tactic every year. Stop playing this game.” All we can do at the moment is wait and watch how things play out. Ideally, one would want the 76ers to remain in Philadelphia. But it is not uncommon for franchises to move, especially in recent times. For example, the New York Giants play their games in New Jersey.
