On this day (6th October) in 1970 nid table Sky Blues were eleven games into their Division One season with four victories to their credit only two at Highfield Road to date. One of them was the previous Saturday when Noel Cantwell‘s men had achieved a smart 3-1 victory over Everton thanks to a brace from (the late) ‘Ernie’ Hunt and another from our Scottish centre forward (and the cheeky chappy’s later fellow CCFPA member) Neil Martin.

On this Tuesday night Fourth Round League Cup matters were on the Sky Blues mind as they faced Division One opponents West Ham United at Highfield Road. In the previous round they had only squeezed past lower league opposition Tranmere Rovers requiring a replay. After a 1-1 draw at Prenton Park CCFC managed to subdue Rovers 2-1 in the replay at H.R. (after the Merseyside team had taken the lead) with another goal from ‘Ernie’ and one from central defender Jeff Blockley (also now a CCFPA member).

Tonight at Highfield Road the Sky Blues made further progress in the competition (which would eventually get them to the Fifth Round), handsomely knocking the Hammers out of the LC by 3-1. Perhaps City expected an easier time since West Ham had only won one game so far in the league but the result was in doubt until the end.
