There had been no hint of what was to come as Watson, who moved to Swansea nearly 18 months ago following a successful five-year spell at Luton Town, saw Swansea claim a 0-0 draw with Stoke City in the Championship on Saturday.

But the club dropped an unexpected three-paragraph statement on Tuesday evening and now supporters are waiting to find out how recruitment and other roles will be handled.

Chairman Andy Coleman said: “I would like to extend our thanks to Paul for his work during his time with us. We wish him every success for the future.”

The Swans added: “The club will update in due course regarding recruitment plans for the position. In the meantime, Paul’s responsibilities will be handled by the existing football department staff.”

Swansea made six permanent signings in the summer, including forwards Eom Ji-sung and Zan Vipotnik and goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux, plus the loan signings of Nelson Abbey and Myles Peart-Harris.
