Roy Keane branded Ian Wright “childish” during a fierce debate over goalkeeping transfers.
After retiring in 2006, the Manchester United legend stepped into management, taking the reins at Sunderland and achieving immediate success by clinching the Championship title. The following season he kept the Black Cats in the Premier League, but was dismissed midway through his third campaign after clashing with then-owner Ellis Short.
During his stint at the Stadium of Light, he encountered a transfer issue that led to a tense discussion with Arsenal icon Wright on the latest episode of the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet. While discussing David de Gea’s 2011 move from Atletico Madrid to Old Trafford, Keane claimed he cancelled a deal for an unnamed goalkeeper because the player wanted to bring his own goalkeeping coach with him.
“I remember I tried to sign a player years ago when I was at Sunderland, and part of the deal he wanted to bring his own goalkeeping coach because he had him at the club,” Keane recalled. “They became mates, you see, played golf together and all that.
