Having joined Arsenal’s coaching staff post-retirement in 2022 due to injury-induced early retirement, Wilshere has paved the way for Birchall’s promotion from assistant coach. Much like Wilshere, he has deep roots in north London and has served across various capacities since joining the academy staff six years ago, recently overseeing the under-17s squad.

After earning his stripes at Barnet, Mansfield Town, Gillingham, and Dover, Birchall now steps up to the head coach role with a wealth of knowledge. An official Arsenal statement reads: “We are delighted to announce that Adam Birchall has become our Under-18s head coach following Jack Wilshere’s departure. Wishing you the best of luck in your new role, Adam.”

Per Mertesacker has heaped praise on Birchall, considering him an integral addition to the ‘key member of the Arsenal family’ and emphasises his qualifications for his new role to inspire a fresh batch of Gunners talent. Wilshere is set to join forces with Norwich City manager Johannes Hoff Thorup and his backroom staff.

The Canaries are positioned seventh in the Championship after accumulating 17 points from their initial 11 fixtures. Wilshere steps into the vacancy left by Narcis Pelach, who departed Carrow Road in September for the managerial position at Stoke City.
