‘Only on television’ – Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler makes wild Anfield claim after Liverpool defeat.

Fabian Hurzeler watched his Brighton team dominate the first half against Liverpool before losing 2-1 after a second half comeback.

Fabian Hurzeler admits Brighton couldn’t cope with Anfield atmosphere after suggesting his side should “easily” have beaten Liverpool. The Reds scored twice in three second-half minutes through Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah to earn a memorable 2-1 triumph on Saturday afternoon and move two points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Brighton had dominated the first half and were unfortunate not to be further ahead after Ferdi Kadioglu smashed home a 14th-minute opener.

But the visitors were unable to maintain their level and fell to a second defeat to Liverpool inside 72 hours.

“In the end football is always about results,” said Hurzeler. “We need results for the process and we have to understand how to get results. On the other side of that, the performance was good enough to win this game easily.

“Especially in the first half, there were a lot of moments where we should score the second and the third goal and maybe the game could be completely different.

“In the second half there were two or three moments when we weren’t precise enough, we lost 50-50 duels and got a little bit affected maybe by the atmosphere.

“These things are so important to experience and to learn to get the result you deserve in the end.”

Asked about how Brighton could address the problem of the Anfield crowd, Hurzeler added: “We can solve this by calling Jurgen (Klopp) and asking him!

“It’s a tough moment, I’d only experienced it on television so far but now I’ve experienced it for myself. These are the small details.

“Being loud, great atmosphere, maybe a wild environment, in exactly those moments you need to stay calm and still play out from the back. They were the solutions and we couldn’t find them in the second half.

“Then the dominance from Liverpool was getting bigger and bigger and they had more crosses from outside the box. They didn’t have big chances, in general we defended quite good, but we have to take responsibility that we weren’t that precise playing with the courage we did in the first half.”

A much-changed Liverpool had beaten Brighton in the League Cup fourth round on Wednesday night.

And of the second successive defeat to the Reds, Hurzeler said: “The performance was good but we’re a club with ambition and we need to get results from these kind of games.
