Coventry City fans, in the main, have given their seal of approval for Mark Robins to dip into the free transfer market and draft in midfield cover in the form of former loan man Matty James.

The 33-year-old is training with his old club Leicester City after being released by Bristol City, whom he spent three seasons with following an impressive half season loan spell with the Sky Blues in the second half of the 2020/21 Championship campaign.

James played 23 league games and scored three goals for Mark Robins during one of their exiled seasons at St Andrew’s without fans, due to the pandemic. Robins attempted to sign the experienced midfielder in the summer of 2021 but he opted to join his former Foxes’ boss Nigel Pearson at Bristol City instead.

Now looking for a new club, James has been working on his fitness at Leicester while helping to coach some of the newly promoted Premier League club’s young players in return for the favour from manager Steve Cooper, who said: “Matty is keeping fit and offering a bit back to the younger players. I think he’s waiting for his next club but that’s not for me to talk about.”

Daily Mail sports writer Tom Collomosse has claimed on social media platform X that the Sky Blues are “considering” a move for the veteran midfielder in light of Ben Sheaf’s injury setback, saying it would be a “smart move” by the club.

Here’s what Sky Blues fans have been saying:

Robotto: Great player. Would have been an established Premier League player for a decade now, if he wasn’t always injured, and sadly that’s a massive issue. If he stays fit, he’s incredible.

Iain Fletcher: Would be ideal. Known quantity. Gives us the leadership and experience we are desperately lacking. Get it done.

Mike Smith: This would be exactly the right player at exactly the right time.

Anthony Hornsby: Get him in now, give him two weeks of CCFC training off the back of his fitness with Leicester and hit the ground running in prep for second half of the season.

Jordan Motlib: Exactly the signing we need. Not every player we bring in has to be a young European future star. Can fill in 10-15 games a season when needed and give us a solid platform to unlock Rudoni/Torp and give more support to attacking players.

Skye-Blue Army: Quality personified. Love the guy.

Katie Blake: Let’s hope this is from a credible source. It makes sense if he can hit the ground running.

Tom: Would not mind this at all.

Sky Blue Jay: Played 32 games last season and an experienced leader. Doesn’t thrill me but a sensible move.

dtb: Need that midfield help. If this is true wouldn’t it be best to get to get him in asap so he has the international break to get ready.

Mark Murphy: Will be the old story won’t play for a month as getting up to speed.

Stephen Windridge: That is a big step backwards again, is MR losing the plot?

Kevin Connors: Wondered when this old chestnut would rise its head.
